Dentistry, DMD / PhD
Program Overview
Program Overview
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) offers a DMD/PhD program in Dentistry, which is an innovative, integrated-clinician scientist training program. This program is designed to provide students with the skills needed for a career in academia and dentistry.
About the Program
The DMD/PhD program is approximately eight years in duration. To begin, students must complete at least two years of coursework in the UAB Graduate School, including passing qualifying examinations and completing a dissertation proposal defense, while maintaining a 3.0 GPA. After being admitted to PhD candidacy, the student's advisory committee will approve their transition to the DMD curriculum. The student will then enter the program as a first-year dental student and continue on the traditional path with their classmates for the second to fourth years. Upon completion of the program, students will be awarded both DMD and PhD degrees simultaneously.
