What you'll learn
- Develop a practical grounding in a range of creative fields of study.
- Explore and develop a range of making skills across main disciplines: ceramics, print, textiles, wood, metal, plastics.
- Investigate materials and methods of making.
- Broaden your knowledge of contemporary craft professionals working in the field.
- Critically assess your work, and the work of others, through discussion and written tasks.
Course structure
- Year one: Upskilling, learning about different materials, and gaining the skills to work both independently and in collaboration.
- Year two: Delve deeper into your chosen area of study, attending classes delivered by a range of tutors who are specialists in their field and current practitioners.
- Year three: Hone your making skills to professional standards, and you’ll be actively marketing your work alongside your making.
How will I be assessed?
- Your progress is evaluated regularly through assessments and feedback, and at the end of each semester through a mix of one-to-one sessions and group tutorials, exhibitions, live projects, verbal/visual presentations, sketchbooks and context folders.
How will I be taught?
- You’ll learn through lectures, talks, practical sessions, individual and group tutorials, and studio critiques and seminars.
- Lectures and seminars with visiting external professionals, designers and makers will help you determine where your current practice sits.
Facilities and resources
- Our student service point at Locksbrook, where you can purchase subsidised art and design materials, hire equipment for free and collect Library resources.
- Specialist technical workshops across all of art and design.
- Inspiring studio space where you can work on projects and refine your practice.
- Our Library offers a wealth of learning resources including books, journals, DVDs and an extensive range of electronic services.
- ASk provides support for your academic work, including feedback on written drafts and other help with academic writing.
- Our Virtual Learning Environment provides online access to learning materials such as lecture slides, assessment information, discussion boards and other resources.
- The Careers team run networking events and advisory workshops that explore your future options and the essentials of the job application process.

Professional placement year
- The Professional Placement Year (PPY) provides you with the opportunity to identify, apply for, and secure professional experience, normally comprising one to three placements over a minimum of nine months.
- Successful completion of this module will demonstrate your ability to secure and sustain graduate-level employment.

Entry requirements
- A Level - grades BBB-BCC preferred including a grade B in an Art and Design or related subject.
- BTEC – Extended Diploma grades from Distinction Distinction Merit (DDM) to Distinction Merit Merit (DMM) in a related subject.
- T Levels – grade Merit preferred in a relevant subject.
- International Baccalaureate – a minimum of 32 points are required with a minimum of grade 5 in a HL Art subject.
- Access to HE courses – typical offers for applicants with Access to HE will be the Access to HE Diploma or Access to HE Certificate (60 credits, 45 of which must be Level 3, at Merit or higher) in a related subject.
English Language Requirements for International and EU Applicants
- IELTS 6.0 - for visa nationals, with a minimum score of IELTS 5.5 in each element.
