Program Overview

Course Title: Certificate in Global Citizenship

• This course is an additional extra-curricular certificate that can only be taken in conjunction with an undergraduate degree course at Bath Spa University.
• Students must start this course in their first year and take it for all three years.

Course Structure

• Students attend between five and eight lectures each year.
• Lectures are given by high-profile, internationally renowned speakers from outside the University, including leaders in business, education, politics, arts, culture, and government.
• Each lecture is followed by a question and answer session with the speaker.

First and Second Year

• Attend Global Citizenship events
• Work with a small group (three to eight students) as part of the Global Citizenship Forum
• Make an active contribution to group work

Third Year

• Attend Global Citizenship events
• Complete a critical and creative reflection on the program and placement

International Placement

• Students on the course will participate in an international study, research, or work experience placement related to their degree.
• The placement must be completed by the time students start their third year.
• Placements are usually during the summer holidays for work placements or one semester during the second year for study abroad placements.

Funding

• Students on the course will be eligible for Global Citizenship funding of up to £1,000 to support an international placement.

Assessment

• Students must attend the lecture and seminar series offered throughout the academic year.
• Students must work with a small group and make an active contribution to group work in their first and second years.
• Students must submit a reflective assignment in their third year on their experience of the Global Citizenship course and their own development as a global citizen.
