Science, MSc by Research

Our Master's by Research in Science combines taught courses with a major research element. It’s ideal for graduates wishing to apply advanced skills to industry-style projects.

This course allows you to follow a structured route into scientific research. For the taught element, you select from a wide range of modules across the natural and life sciences appropriate to your individual research topic, with the guidance of your supervisor. The course is suited to students interested in a postgraduate research qualification and strengthening their insight into the mechanics of research in science.

Your research can cover a broad range of areas, including biology, chemistry, forensic science, and human nutrition. Many research projects we support span across these disciplines. You'll benefit from one-to-one project supervision with specialist academics and strong links with industry. We've also invested heavily in extensive research facilities, including electron microscopes, mass spectrometers, and specialist bench-top analytical equipment, which are available to you at our Medway Campus in Kent.

Entry requirements

UK citizens and permanent residents

• An undergraduate (honours) degree at 2:2, or above.
• Applicants who don’t meet the above but have significant experience may be considered.
• Suitable applicants will be required to attend an interview.

How you will learn

Teaching

• Two-thirds of this course is a research project that will help you develop significant expertise in a particular subject.
• Alongside this, you choose options from the department's portfolio of master-level courses.
• The course is ideal for an industry-based project and/or student.

Class sizes

• For specialist modules, our classes are usually limited to 20 students in lab sessions and 40 in lectures.
• This helps to create familiarity between students and staff and ensure a great learning experience.

Independent learning

• The main assessment of this course is a research project.
• For this, much of your study time will be spent working independently.

Overall workload

• If you are studying full-time, you should expect the workload to be similar to a full-time job.
• For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of courses you are studying.

Assessment

• You will be assessed by an oral examination and a dissertation/write up.
