Program Overview
The MEng Civil & Environmental Engineering program at the University of Strathclyde is a five-year Masters in Engineering degree that provides students with a comprehensive education in civil engineering, including structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water engineering, environmental engineering, and transport planning. The program is professionally accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and Institute of Highway Engineers.
Key Facts
- UCAS Code: H290
- Accreditation: Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and Institute of Highway Engineers
- Study Abroad: Opportunity to study abroad in Year 3 or Year 5
- Second-Year Entry: Available for suitably-qualified students
Why This Course?
Civil engineering develops and improves facilities and services that society needs, from the supply of clean water and energy to the design and construction of roads, railways, and stations. Graduates develop and renew towns and cities, improve links with remote communities, and solve problems of air, land, and water pollution.
What You'll Study
The program follows a common structure in Years 1 to 3, with five core threads:
- Structural engineering
- Geotechnical engineering
- Water engineering
- Environmental engineering
- Transport and construction
In later years, the program places greater emphasis on environmental engineering, such as water and waste, water treatment, and contaminated land remediation.
Year 1
- Foundations of civil engineering, including mathematics, engineering mechanics, civil engineering design, computing, professional skills, and geology
Year 2
- Structural engineering, soil mechanics, hydraulics and hydrology, chemistry and materials, and surveying
Years 3 & 4
- Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, transport planning and engineering, construction management, and a project dissertation
Year 5
- Flexible curriculum allowing students to extend their knowledge in areas of civil engineering, with the chance to select classes from across the Faculty of Engineering
