Program Overview

The University of Strathclyde offers a BA Joint Honours degree in French and Law, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the French language, culture, and legal systems. Program Structure

The BA Joint Honours degree in French and Law is a four-year program that combines the study of French language, literature, and culture with the principles and practices of law. The program is structured to provide students with a broad-based education in the first year, followed by more specialized study in the subsequent years.


Year 1

In the first year, students take two combined classes: French 1A and French 1B. These courses are designed to develop students' language skills and introduce them to French culture and society. Students also study Legal Methods and Public Law 1, which provide a foundation in the principles and practices of law.


Year 2

In the second year, students continue to develop their language skills and study more advanced aspects of French culture and society. They also take classes in Public Law 2, Domestic Relations, Commercial Law, and Involuntary Obligations: Delict & Unjustified Enrichment.


Year 3

In the third year, students take two language classes and a French Studies 3 class, which focuses on the Occupation and its portrayal in French films, as well as France since 1945. They also have the opportunity to take elective classes in Law, such as Law, Film & Popular Culture, Legal Theory, and Human Rights Law.


Year 4

In the final year, students take a language class and a French Studies 4 class, which focuses on Images of Women in French culture and society. They also have the opportunity to take elective classes in Law, such as Employment Law, Banking Law & Finance, and Public International Law.


Entry Requirements

The standard entry requirements for the BA Joint Honours degree in French and Law are:


  • Highers: AAAA (first sitting) or AAAAB (second sitting)
  • A Levels: ABB-BBB
  • International Baccalaureate: 32-30
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: Two H2 passes and three H3 passes, including English
