Program Overview
The University of Strathclyde offers a BA Hons Education & Economics program, which combines the study of education with economics. This program provides opportunities for those who wish to work in professions associated with education but do not necessarily want to become teachers.
Why This Course?
This course develops students' knowledge and understanding of education systems in Scotland and beyond. It offers the opportunity to put theory into practice in a community placement, enhancing employability. The program also explores the importance of economics in understanding global consequences, such as decisions on money, banking, interest rates, taxation, and government spending.
What You'll Study
The program covers various aspects of education and economics, including:
- Education issues, such as the impact of poverty and social class on children and society
- The role of culture and community in education
- How people learn and the place of policy and politics in education
- Economics, including consumers and industries, markets, market failure, and the role of government
- Microeconomics and macroeconomics
Single & Joint Honours Information
Education can be studied as a joint honors program, while economics can be studied alongside a humanities and social sciences subject. The available subject combinations may change each year.

- Year 3: Educational Encounters Past & Present, History & Philosophy of Education, Children & Childhood, Social Pedagogy with Adults, Topics in Microeconomics with Cross Section Econometrics, Macroeconomics 3
- Year 4: Educational Representation in Film & Literature, Dissertation, Microeconomics 4, Macroeconomics 4, Introduction to Econometrics, Economics of Firms & Industries, Industrial Economics, Applied Econometrics, Financial Development & Economic Growth, Behavioural Economics, Natural Resource, Environmental & Energy Economics
Learning & Teaching
The program includes workshops, lab space, specialist teaching space, field trips, and the chance to study elective and optional classes. Students also have access to guest speakers and can organize guest speakers from relevant organizations.

Placements
Every BA option gives students the chance to gain valuable industry experience as part of a credit-bearing work placement class in their third or fourth year.
Entry Requirements
The standard entry requirements are:
- Highers: AAAA (1st sitting), AAAAB (2nd sitting)
- A Levels: ABB-BBB
- International Baccalaureate: 32-30
- Irish Leaving Certificate: Two H2 passes and three H3 passes including English
- HNC: Year 1 entry, Social Sciences: A in Graded Unit, Maths National 5 B, or equivalent

Fees & Funding
The fees for the program are:
- Scotland: £1,820
- England, Wales & Northern Ireland: £9,535
- Republic of Ireland: If you are an Irish citizen and have been ordinary resident in the Republic of Ireland for the three years prior to the relevant date, and will be coming to Scotland for Educational purposes only, you will meet the criteria of England, Wales & Northern Ireland fee status
- International: £21,550
