Program Overview

Environmental Geospatial Data Analysis - Module GY5021

Brief Description

Solving real-world environmental challenges relies on accurate geospatial data analysis. This 6-week micro-credential educates students in the use of open-source and commercial Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to analyse environmental and geospatial data.

Programme Content

During this module, students will:

  • Learn how to work with different types of geospatial data, including vector (point, line, polygon), raster, and attribute data.
  • Find out how to import and manipulate primary and secondary datasets using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software.
  • Master spatial analysis techniques, including coordinate reference systems, geometric processing, and geoprocessing tools.
  • Discover how to illustrate geospatial data effectively through maps and animated visualisations.

Key Information

  • Delivered over six weeks through a combination of online learning and practical applications.
  • Assessment will be based on a project creating a map illustrating analysed environmental data.
  • Part-time considerations:
    • Designed for working professionals
    • Evening or recorded lectures
    • Additional prep and group work time
    • Timetable provided after registration

Entry Requirements

To help students be successful on this course:

  • Applicants should hold a bachelor's degree (NFQ Level 8), with at least a grade 2 (2:2) in Geography, Environmental Science, Sociology, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Guidelines for application:
    • When applying, be sure to include the Module Code GY5021.
    • By applying, students confirm that they meet the entry requirements and can take part in the course and its assessments.
    • This course will go ahead if it meets minimum enrolment number.
