This micro-credential introduces students to the use of open source and commercial Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to analyze environmental and other geospatial data. Topics covered include types of data, importing data into GIS software, choosing and working with coordinate reference systems, manipulating geospatial data using geometric, geoprocessing, and analysis tools, working with geospatial temporal data, and illustrating geospatial data through the production of maps and animated images. Upon successful completion, students will be able to compile geospatial data, use coordinate reference systems, evaluate geospatial data, determine appropriate courses of action, illustrate geospatial data, and appreciate legal and ethical issues surrounding the collection and use of geospatial data.
