Program Overview
Mathematics (Common Entry)
Overview
The Mathematics (Common Entry) program at the University of Limerick is designed for students who are interested in mathematics and its applications, but may not be sure which specific area they wish to pursue. This program provides a broad common first year, introducing students to various topics in mathematics, statistics, physics, and economics, before allowing them to choose their preferred pathway for the remaining three years of their degree.
Key Information
- NFQ Level: 8
- Award: Honours Bachelor Degree
- Course Code: LM124
- Duration: 4 Years
- Subject Area: Science
- Course Director: Prof Kevin Moroney
Why Study Mathematics at UL?
The University of Limerick focuses on applied mathematical sciences, using mathematics and statistics to solve problems in science, engineering, industry, finance, and society. This program equips students with highly valued skills to translate real-world systems into mathematical language, analyze, and simulate these systems to uncover hidden patterns and trends, and solve problems.
What You Will Study
The first semester introduces calculus, linear algebra, and computer programming, along with a selection of other modules such as physics and economics. Students then choose their preferred pathway to specialize in for the remaining three years, which can be in Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics and Physics, or Economics and Mathematical Sciences.
Module Electives and Course Pathways
- Electives: Give students the opportunity to choose modules they want to study, ranging from 1 to 4 modules per semester.
- Pathways: Allow students to specialize in a particular area within the broader course, influencing the modules they can study each semester and recognized in their final degree.
Entry Requirements
- CAO Points History: 456
