The Computer Science Common Entry program at the University of Limerick is designed for students with a strong interest in technology and problem-solving. About the Course
The Computer Science Common Entry program is a gateway to a degree in one of three specialized areas: Computer Systems, Cyber Security and IT Forensics, or Computer Games Development. Students follow a common first-year program and then select one of the three BSc programs during the second semester. The program is designed to provide students with a broad foundation in computer science, including programming, computer architecture, games modeling, and the mathematical basis of computing.

What You Will Study
The first year of the program provides a broad introduction to computer science, including:
- Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) in Java and Python
- Functional and assembly languages
- Computer architecture and organization
- Games design and programming
- Discrete and computer mathematics
Students then choose one of the three specialized pathways:
- BSc Computer Systems: Focuses on the development of secure and intelligent software applications, with an emphasis on artificial intelligence and data science.
- BSc in Cyber Security and IT Forensics: Focuses on the construction of safe and secure networks and systems, with an emphasis on cyber security and IT forensics.
- BSc Computer Games Development: Focuses on the design and implementation of intelligent games, with an emphasis on games programming and development.
Entry Requirements
- Minimum Grades: Applicants are required to hold at the time of enrollment the established Leaving Certificate (or an approved equivalent) with a minimum of six subjects, including two H5 (Higher Level) grades and four O6 (Ordinary Level) grades or four H7 (Higher Level) grades.
- Subject Requirements: Mathematics, Irish or another language, and English are required subjects.
- Additional Considerations: A Special Mathematics Examination will be offered at UL following the Leaving Certificate results for those students who did not achieve the Mathematics requirement.
How to Apply
Irish students must apply to UL via the CAO. Students from the UK, EU, and non-EU countries can apply through the CAO or directly to the University.
