Program Overview

Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science

The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science is a four-year undergraduate degree program offered by the University of Limerick. This program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the principles of biomedical science, including biochemistry, molecular biology, and pharmacology.

Key Information

  • NFQ Level: 8
  • Award: Honours Bachelor Degree
  • Entry Route: Biological and Chemical Sciences (Common Entry)
  • Course Code: LM123
  • Duration: 4 years
  • Fees: Vary depending on student status (EU or non-EU)
  • Subject Area: Science
  • Course Director: Professor Pat Kiely

About the Course

The Biomedical Science program will be available as an option to students who have chosen the Bioscience route and after entry through LM123. After successful completion of Year 3 of Bioscience, students will have the option to transfer to the School of Medicine for the 4th and final year of their undergraduate degree. This tailored exit route provides students with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills to gain an understanding of the importance of working partnerships between scientists and healthcare professionals.

What You Will Study

By entering through LM123, students will study a broad common first semester and will undertake specific modules in the area of chemistry, biology, maths, and physics. The second and third year of the Bioscience program will provide a strong foundation in the understanding of biochemical systems and microbial technology. The 4th year Biomedical Science exit route includes modules such as:

  • Pharmacology and Drug Development
  • Cancer Mechanisms
  • Mammalian Tissue Architecture, Structure, and Function
  • Clinical Medicine and Clinical Skills
  • Diagnostic Techniques and Practices
  • Biomedical Science Final Year Project

Entry Requirements

Additional considerations for entry include:

  • Please refer to the entry requirements for LM123 - Biological and Chemical Sciences (Common Entry)
  • Non-EU Entry Requirements: Please choose your country of application for specific requirements

How to Apply

The application process varies depending on the applicant's country of origin:

  • Ireland: Apply via the CAO
  • The UK: Students who have completed their A-Levels can apply via the CAO
  • EU: EU Students can apply via the CAO
  • Non-EU country: Apply directly to the University of Limerick

Fees and Funding

Student course fees are broken into three components: Student contribution, Student Levy, and Tuition Fees. The fees vary depending on the student's status (EU or non-EU) and whether they are in receipt of a grant. Examples of fees for EU students with free fees status, EU students without a grant, and non-EU students are provided.
