Applied Sports Coaching - MSc
Brief Description
The MSc in Applied Sports Coaching is an innovative two-year, part-time programme designed for coaches who want to elevate their expertise and apply cutting-edge coaching methodologies. Overview
During this programme, students will:
- Develop advanced coaching strategies by integrating cutting-edge research and case studies from leading practitioners.
- Enhance their coaching practice by working with a community of peers to reflect on session plans, coaching behaviours, and athlete development.
- Develop leadership, management, data analysis, and critical thinking skills.
- Conduct applied research to evaluate and improve coaching effectiveness and contribute to the wider coaching community.
Programme Content
The programme is delivered part-time over two years, with a blended approach combining online learning and three on-campus days per semester. The second year includes a research project tailored to the student's coaching practice and career goals.
Year 1
- The Coaching Process and Practice: Critically evaluate coaching practice and effectiveness, refining personal coaching philosophy.
- Reflective Practice for Sports Coaches: Develop reflective practice as a tool for continuous coaching development.
- Performance Analysis in Coaching: Develop skills in data collection, evaluation, and communication, using performance insights to inform decision-making and athlete development.
- Athlete & Coach Development: Explore talent identification, athlete pathways, and coach education, analysing models and developing strategies for growth.
Year 2
- Management & Leadership in Coaching: Develop leadership and management skills, focusing on culture, team dynamics, and performance planning.
- Research Project Development: Equip students with skills to design, justify, and apply research methods to enhance coaching practice.
- Research Project 1 Sports Coaching: Conduct a personal research project to investigate and develop a key aspect of coaching.
- Research Project 2 Sports Coaching: Continue independent research, completing a project that contributes to coaching development.
Entry Requirements
There are two entry routes:
- Entry Route 1:
- Bachelor's degree (NFQ Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2, in a relevant discipline.
- National Governing Body Level 1 Coaching Award.
- Previous experience in sports coaching and actively coaching during the programme.
- Garda clearance.
- Entry Route 2:
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for those without a bachelor's degree, demonstrating knowledge, skills, and experience needed for the programme.
International Students
- Country-specific qualifications and English language requirements apply.
Fees
- EU: €4,000 per annum
- Non-EU: €9,100 per annum
- Year 2 fees are subject to change.
