Program Overview
Introduction to the Medicine Program
The University of Limerick's (UL) BM BS Graduate Entry Medical Programme is designed for graduates from any discipline, offering a highly innovative curriculum that enables students to complete their undergraduate medical training in four years. This program is tailored for graduate students, providing a comprehensive education in medicine.
Program Structure
The curriculum is divided into three main modules or domains:
- Domain 1: Knowledge of Health and Illness
- Domain 2: Clinical and Anatomical Skills
- Domain 3: Professional Competencies
These domains run concurrently throughout the four years, ensuring that all aspects of the skills required to become a doctor are addressed.
Years 1 and 2
In the first two years, the curriculum is structured around Problem-Based Learning (PBL), backed up by a small number of lectures, structured clinical skills teaching, and anatomical skills teaching. The Professional Competencies module is taught through lectures, tutorials, workshops, and seminars.
Years 3 and 4
Years 3 and 4 involve clinical training, where students rotate through the major clinical disciplines in affiliated hospitals and General Practices. Students spend 18 weeks in the General Practice/Primary Care setting and undergo hospital-based clinical training in Medicine and Surgery.
Clinical Placements
The School of Medicine has affiliations with several teaching hospitals and General Practice/Primary Care networks across Ireland. Students can expect to be placed outside of Limerick at some stage during their clinical training.
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for the program, candidates must hold a minimum 2.1 (second-class honors, grade one) result in their first honors bachelor degree. For EU applicants, GAMSAT is used as the sole instrument for selection. Non-EU applicants must also attend an interview as part of the selection process.
Fees and Funding
Student course fees are comprised of tuition fees, a student levy, and a healthcare screening cost. The tuition fees for EU students are 15,820, while non-EU students pay 56,496. Scholarships are available, including the Access to Medicine Scholarship Scheme and various faculty-specific prizes.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Medicine program can pursue careers in medical practice, medical research, medical education, medical administration, and medical journalism. The program's problem-based learning approach prepares students for their roles as doctors, equipping them with the necessary skills to succeed in their chosen career paths.
