Degree Overview:
This is a nationally recognised qualification for engineers in industry that will equip you with the skills and knowledge required to design, develop, and test various systems. You’ll develop the analytical and research skills necessary for design, and undertake a personal project in a specific field. Ultimately this course will teach you to become a competent practitioner with transferable and industry specific skills which are complemented by modules in project and business management. What’s more, you’ll be introduced to lifelong learning and continuous professional development within the professional institution to enhance your professional standing and career prospects.
Outline:
Year 1
- Analytical Methods for Design: The aim of this unit is to develop the your ability to analyse, predict and evaluate the performance of circuits combining electronic principles at component level, with mathematical methods and to design and build circuits to test these models and circuits. You will also be introduced to the interfacing of PCs to external circuits and devices and the development of a website.
- Project: You'll be encouraged to develop the ability to manage and develop group and individual projects. The projects will bring together aspects of other units within the programme.
- Business & Project Management: The unit will focus on effective project management skills in individual and group-based projects developing an awareness of customer requirements, effective planning and organisation skills in a business context.
- Electronic Systems Design: Develop your understanding of analogue and digital electronic systems. The unit also introduces interfacing methods.
- Applied Software in Engineering: The aim of this unit is to develop your understanding of software programming techniques within engineering applications. You will design and develop program code in order to produce solutions to a require specification. You will be expected to use functions and procedures within scripted and visual working environments.
- The Engineering Professional: You'll embark on a programme for lifelong learning and continuous professional development to enhance your professional standing and career prospects.
- Major Project: This unit provides an opportunity for you to focus on your chosen area of specialisation and to make a major contribution either to a company’s business or to develop a new product from scratch.

Students are also registered with the IED as student members and completion of the course enables partial Incorporated Engineers registration. For suitable candidates there is opportunity to undertake NVQ Level 4 in Engineering Leadership in conjunction with this course as part of a Higher Apprenticeship programme with their employer.
Other:
As a student on this course you will have the benefits of using Bournemouth & Poole College’s excellent facilities including modern rapid PCB design and prototyping facilities. There are also a number of state-of-the-art CAD/CAM suites available and a refurbished Materials Laboratory. A company-relevant major project is undertaken which is directly linked to your CPD as required by the IED.

- For July/September 2023 entry:
- HNC: One full A Level (at grade C or above) in a required subject, or equivalent Level 3 qualification e.g. BTEC National Diploma.
- FdEng: 120 Level 4 credits from an HNC in a required subject.

Language Proficiency Requirements:
IELTS (Academic) 6.0 with 5.5 in each component or equivalent.
