The program is open to students with a good undergraduate Honours degree (UK Upper Second Class Honours or equivalent) and in some cases, a Masters degree. Students are expected to have a strong interest in research and to be able to demonstrate their research skills, vision, and motivation. The program is normally full-time, but part-time study may be possible. Students are required to submit a dissertation of up to 60,000 words for the MPhil and a thesis of up to 100,000 words for the PhD.
Assessment:
The MPhil is assessed through a dissertation of up to 60,000 words. Assessment of a PhD is normally by a written thesis of up to 100,000 words and viva (oral) examination.

The program is a collaborative effort between the Universities of Exeter, Bristol, Bath, Plymouth, and UWE Bristol. Students will have supervisors from more than one discipline and more than one institution. The program is normally full-time, but part-time study may be possible.
