Overview
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course which teaches people how to spot the triggers, signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help and support on first aid basis. Just like physical first aid, MHFA will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis. It will enhance your practical and interpersonal skills and provide a deeper awareness and understanding of mental health, including the factors that can affect people’s wellbeing, including your own.

Entry Requirements
Mental Health First Aid at UON applies to all levels and all sectors as it focuses on raising awareness of mental health issues and to reduce discrimination and stigma. It helps managers and staff to support colleagues who are struggling at work and put mental health first aid into action.
Course Content
Two Day Course
A practical skills and awareness course designed to give you:
- A deeper understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect people’s wellbeing, including your own.
- Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues.
- Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress.
- Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgmental listening.
- Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to appropriate support.
Learning takes place through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions.
Half-day course
This 4.5 hour awareness course will empower you to:
- Keep your awareness of mental health support current.
- Update your knowledge of mental health and what influences it.
- Understand strategies to support staff.
This course can be delivered either face-to-face or online.
Achievements: Award Winning Programme at UON
Winners of the National Inside Out Award in 2021, judges commended the University for its “three-pronged approach covering students, staff and the community as mental health first aid has been used very effectively to raise awareness and promote conversation about mental health.” The team has also been nominated for the nationally recognised award of 'Teaching Innovation of the Year ' at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2020.
