Overview

​​This Children and Young People PhD / PhD by Published Works programme offers an excellent route to expand your knowledge and research skills. We aim to create an environment which promotes internationally excellent research that has a positive impact on both practice and policy. Our Centre for Education and Research is passionate about children and young people and their place in our communities. So, if you are a graduate holding a Masters in any subject and/or have experience of working in formal, informal, or non-formal education, this might be the research area for you. Successful defence of their final thesis provides our research students with a Doctor of Philosophy which is the highest qualification that any UK university can award and offer an excellent opportunity to move into higher management and research positions within Education and aligned fields. Entry Requirements

Applicants are generally required to have a Masters from a UK university or overseas equivalent, in a relevant discipline (though there is some flexibility within this e.g., for students on an individual basis who have lower-level qualifications or qualifications in a different subject area, but relevant experience).


During the application process all suitable candidates will be asked to attend an interview.

Course Content

The Children and Young People PhD programme is a way for you to develop your specialism and gain valuable research skills and competencies.


While developing, designing, and carrying out your research project, you will receive general, discipline based and project specific training together with the support of a dedicated supervisory team enabling you to conduct your research work effectively and independently. As a member of the Centre for Education and Research you will also benefit from a community of researchers and practitioners. A PhD in Education with a specialisation in Children and Young People will enable you to find research and development roles within Education and aligned fields, or progress into an academic career.
