Mental Health Foundations: Emotional Needs and Resources

Overview

This is a new module offering as part of the Health CPD provision and is being delivered in partnership between Suffolk Mind and University of Suffolk.


The module will bridge the gap between theory and the holistic application of practical techniques, knowledge, and skills. You will carry out an in-depth exploration of the emotional needs and resources framework by applying what you learn to your case work. Alongside this knowledge, you will gain effective tools, techniques, and strategies to support mental health needs with confidence.


Module Aims

  • An understanding of the connections between security, trauma and addiction
  • Understanding the Mental Health Continuum and its relationship with REM sleep
  • How to work effectively with unconscious patterns in the brain
  • Recognise the language of strong emotions and challenging negative thinking with conversational reframes
  • Protecting yourself from the effect of negative metaphors and abstractions
  • A framework for supporting wellbeing – RIGAAR
  • Fine-tune rapport-building skills and set collaborative goals which meet needs
  • Build confidence in talking about and responding to suicide and self-harm
  • Work with reward and punishment mechanisms which underpin motivation to change
  • Understand why self-medicating is so prevalent
  • Become more effective at supporting co-morbid conditions
  • Examine concepts which root ethical practice is rooted in emotional wellbeing
  • Recognise unconscious patterns which shape how we see ourselves and others

Justin is Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing developing work with young people experiencing poor mental wellbeing, supporting holistic care and recovery.
