Program Overview
The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) with a Thermofluids track focuses on advanced study of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics. Students gain expertise in these areas through required and elective courses, and can choose a thesis or nonthesis option. The program offers flexibility through online learning options and fee reductions for fully online students.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) with a Thermofluids track is designed for students holding a bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution. This program focuses on the study of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics.
Objectives:
The program aims to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills in:
- Thermodynamics: Understanding the principles of thermodynamics and their application in various engineering systems.
- Heat Transfer: Mastering the mechanisms of heat transfer and their application in designing efficient systems.
Program Description:
The Thermofluids track requires 30 credit hours, broken down as follows:
- Required Courses (12 credits): Students must complete four core courses covering mathematical methods, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and classical thermodynamics.
- Elective Courses (12 credits): Students choose at least four elective courses from a list of approved options, allowing them to specialize in areas like turbomachinery, convection heat transfer, radiation heat transfer, computational fluid dynamics, combustion phenomena, and more.
- Thesis/Nonthesis Option (6 credits): Students can choose between a thesis option, involving research and a written thesis, or a nonthesis option, requiring coursework and a research project.
Other:
- Program Flexibility: The MSME - Thermofluids program can be completed fully online, although not all elective options or prerequisites may be offered online.
- Fee Reduction: Students completing the program exclusively online may receive a reduction in campus-based fees.
- International Student Requirements: International students (F or J visa) must enroll in a full-time course load of 9 credit hours during fall and spring semesters, with a maximum of 3 credit hours taken online.
- State Restrictions: UCF may not be authorized to provide online courses in certain states.
