Outline

This module is designed for health professionals to advance their knowledge and skills in neonatal nursing practice. It prepares nurses to critically explore the management of the ill neonate in order to develop and expand their role within neonatal care.


On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:


  • Assess and manage infants admitted to the Neonatal Unit
  • Manage infants requiring respiratory support
  • Manage and support growing premature infants including feeding issues
  • Evaluate and identify infants with GIT issues
  • Establish discharge plans and promote family centred care
  • Evaluate professional development and autonomy in clinical practice
  • Implement a comprehensive multidisciplinary plan of care that incorporates cultural and development variations

Module Content

  • Admission and assessment of neonates to a special care unit
  • Care and management of infants requiring respiratory support, Oxygen, Low Flow, High Flow and CPAP in special care
  • Management of growing premature infants, infants with congenital abnormalities, including, neurological disorders, gastrointestinal dysfunction, metabolic and haematological disorders
  • Skin care, family centred care, discharge planning, cultural and social issues, professional development, autonomy and risk management in clinical practice

Practicalities

  • Assessment: Total Marks 200: Continuous Assessment 200 marks (Oral presentation (100 marks); Case study 1 x 2,000 words (100 marks))
  • Compulsory Elements: Continuous Assessment

Requirements

  • Registered Nurses/Midwives/Children's Nurses working in neonatal or paediatric care ONLY
  • Applicants who are under 23 years of age must satisfy the minimum entry requirements as for the Degrees in Nursing or Midwifery
  • Admission to the module(s) will be subject to internal university approval processes on the recommendation of the Head of School
  • There may be a requirement for Garda Vetting Clearance for this module
  • Applicants for Nursing and Midwifery CPD modules who do not hold an up-to-date IELTS certificate showing the requisite Academic Board approved CM&H scores must demonstrate evidence of appropriate work experience within an English language environment for at least the previous 2 years
