Program Overview
The Languages Certificate program at UCC is a part-time program designed for post-leaving certificate students, mature students, and current degree students seeking additional language skills. The program offers a choice of 10 credits from two languages, including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Upon completion, students can demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the chosen languages. The program aims to enhance linguistic skills and contribute to economic growth by preparing students for careers in export-driven industries and Global Shared Services.

Degree Overview:
The Languages Certificate program is a part-time program designed for three main groups of students:
- Post-Leaving Certificate students who want to gain a stand-alone qualification in languages before starting their degree program.
- Mature students who want to improve their existing language skills or learn new languages for personal or professional development.
- Students currently registered on UCC degree programs who may apply for permission to take the certificate over two academic years as an additional 10 credits per academic year (one language per year).
Outline:
The program consists of 20 credits, with 10 credits each from two languages. The languages offered include:
- Chinese: CH1001 Chinese Language (Mandarin) 1, CH2001 Chinese Language (Mandarin) 2, CH3000 Chinese Language (Mandarin) 3
- Hispanic Studies:
- Portuguese: PU1101 Portuguese Beginners Language
- Spanish: HS0028 Spanish Language (Beginner Level), HS0128 Spanish Improvers, HS1102 First Year Spanish Language for Non-Beginners, HS2101 Second year Spanish Language Course (Ex-Beginners), HS2102 Second Year Spanish Language Course (Ex non-Beginners), HS3001 Final Year Spanish Language
Careers:
The program aims to prepare students to play their part in the national strategy to up-skill the workforce, with specific reference to the need for linguistic skills that will contribute to export-driven economic recovery and the expanding Global Shared Services sector.
Other:
On successful completion of the program, students should be able to:
- Read texts at an appropriate level in each of the languages studied and perform tasks based on their comprehension.
- Communicate in writing at an appropriate level and in a range of registers in each of the languages studied.
- Perform tasks based on aural comprehension at an appropriate level in each of the languages studied.
- Communicate orally at an appropriate level and in a range of registers in each of the languages studied.
- Demonstrate awareness of aspects of non-linguistic communication relevant to each of the languages studied.
