Outline

Module Objective:

To equip students with the skills required to respond effectively to the needs of young people in individual (one to one) and group situations.


Module Content:

This module builds on the theoretical and practical foundations of reflective youth work practice methodologies in developing student skills for working with individuals and groups.


Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:


  • Recognise and apply appropriate theories of counselling.
  • Practice appropriate engagement and communication skills.
  • Recognise professional limits and boundaries in youth work.
  • Respond effectively to individuals in crisis.
  • Facilitate youth groups.
  • Design and implement developmental group work programmes using appropriate resources.
  • Record and evaluate group work processes and outcomes.
  • Record and evaluate work and outcomes with individual young people.
  • Understand the impacts of modernity on young people as individuals and as a cohort.

Additional Teaching Mode Information

  • Teaching Method(s): 12 x 2hr(s) Lectures; 12 x 2hr(s) Directed Study.
  • Pass Standard and any Special Requirements for Passing Module: 50%.
  • Formal Written Examination: No Formal Written Examination.
  • The module will be delivered through a combination of online and face to face methods subject to Covid 19 guidelines.
  • Assessment: Total Marks 200: Continuous Assessment 200 marks (2 X Case Study. Case Study 1; working with young people (individual case study) 1 x 3,000 words, 100 marks. Case Study 2; working with young people (Group case study) 1 x 3,000 words, 100 marks.).
  • Compulsory Elements: Continuous Assessment.
  • Penalties (for late submission of Course/Project Work etc.): Where work is submitted up to and including 7 days late, 5% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Where work is submitted up to and including 14 days late, 10% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Work submitted 15 days late or more shall be assigned a mark of zero.
  • Requirements for Supplemental Examination: Marks in passed element(s) of Continuous Assessment are carried forward, Failed element(s) of Continuous Assessment must be repeated (50% is the maximum mark awarded in repeat examinations.).

Requirements

  • Where modules are part of an existing programme and are to be offered as CPD Modules, the applicant will be expected to meet the entry requirements of the programme.
  • Applicants will normally have achieved a minimum grade of a 2H2 in an Honours degree.
  • Candidates will be normally be graduates from cognate disciplines, including but not limited to: Social Science, Education (incl. Sports Studies), Social Work, Early Years and Childhood Studies, Social Care (NFQ, Level 8), Sociology and Psychology.
  • Applicants are also required to possess a minimum of two years' experience in a paid or voluntary capacity in a full-time youth work position (or equivalent part-time experience).

  • The fee for this module is €1021.66.
