Program Overview


Trauma and Frontline Workers - Continuing Professional Development Certificate

The Certificate in Continuing Professional Development in Trauma and Frontline Workers is delivered by the Department of Criminology at University College Cork (UCC) in conjunction with WAVE Trauma Centre in Belfast, and Adult Continuing Education (ACE), UCC. This course aims to explore the academic foundations of research-based, trauma-informed approaches to examining, preventing, and mitigating professional exposure to trauma.


Course Outline

The course will examine and critique traumatological theories and issues as they apply to frontline staff through an interdisciplinary lens, drawing on contemporary academic literature from psychology, sociology, victimology, trauma studies, and psychiatry.

Course Practicalities

The course begins with an orientation week, involving online engagement with tutors, a library tutorial, and familiarization with the online learning platform. Throughout the course, students will have access to academic and pastoral support via ACE and the course tutor.

  • Online moderated activities, including personal online tutoring and online group discussions
  • Written assignments
  • Reading and reflective practice

Students are recommended to set aside approximately 15 hours a week over the 12-week semester.


Requirements

  • Candidates must hold an honors (NFQ level 8) primary degree with a minimum 2H2 in a relevant discipline.
  • Relevant disciplines include psychology, sociology, criminology, social work, counseling, conflict studies, women's studies, epidemiology, medicine, and nursing.
  • Candidates without an NFQ level 8 award are eligible to apply if they can demonstrate at least three years of professional experience in a related field.
  • English Language Requirement: All applicants whose first language is not English must sit an IELTS test or a recognized equivalent test, with a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.
  • Technical Requirements: Students require access to a PC/Laptop running Windows 7 or later and Mac OSX 10.7.4, with common plug-ins and a modern standards-compliant web browser.

Fees and Costs

The course fee is 1000. On application, students pay 50% of the fees, with the remainder due by week 6 of the course.
