Program Overview

Process Safety Engineering (PE6024)

Module Goal

To enable students to develop an understanding across the broad subject of process safety. In particular, the module will explore how process design is influenced by safety and students will develop the ability to identify and analyse hazards and the approaches used to prevent them.

Module Content

  • Hazard Identification; HAZOP; Risk Assessment; Process Safety in Design; Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA); Functional Safety; Consequence Modelling, Hazardous Area Classification; ATEX, Process Safety Management; Process Safety Legislation.

Additional Teaching Mode Information

  • 1 x 4hr(s) lectures
  • 1 x 8hr(s) tutorials
  • 1 x 12hr(s) problem-based learning

Practicalities

Continuous Assessment - 100 marks

  • Assignment - process safety questions- 30 marks.
  • Project - case studies: safety engineering exercise - 70 marks.

Why Choose

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Categorise and discuss the physical, chemical and biological hazards in chemical/pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical processes;
  2. Identify, measure and quantify hazards and risks;
  3. Assess inherently safer design concepts
  4. Examine the elements of process safety management, including Process Safety Culture, Knowledge Management, Safe Work Practices, Management of Change, Emergency Management, Incident Investigation;
  5. Discuss legislation, standards and regulations related to process safety
  6. Compose a process safety study.

Requirements

This micro-credential is organised to accommodate part-time students who are working in industry looking to upskill or reskill in this specialist area. Learners seeking to balance their work commitments with learning are fully supported in the structure of this micro-credential with lectures and tutorials in full-day sessions every 3-4 weeks, mostly on a Saturday.
