Program Overview

The University College Cork (UCC) offers a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) module titled "Promoting Positive Ageing and Planning for End of Life" (NU6079). This module aims to facilitate students in developing a critical awareness of contemporary issues in gerontological nursing.

Module Objective

The primary objective of this module is to enable students to critically discuss the concept of health promotion as it relates to older people, summarize the main elements of rehabilitation, and evaluate issues related to the recognition, prevention, and management of abuse and self-neglect in older people.

Module Content

The module covers various topics, including:

• Health promotion and positive ageing
• Rehabilitation
• Interface between primary and secondary care
• Transition from informal to formal care
• Informal care and family carers
• Elder abuse and self-neglect
• Complementary therapies
• End of life issues and palliative care
• Sexual health and sexually transmitted infections

Module Delivery

The module is delivered wholly face-to-face, with no online or web-based technology use. The content is delivered in writing (hard copy) or verbally (face-to-face). The teaching method includes lectures, workshops, discussion board preparation and participation, required reading, assignment preparation and submission, and self-directed learning.

Assessment

The assessment for this module consists of continuous assessment, with 100 marks allocated as follows:

• Oral presentation: 90 marks
• E-tivities: 10 marks

Requirements

This module is open to registered healthcare professionals in nursing, midwifery, medicine, and clinical therapies or other allied disciplines. Applicants must provide evidence of current registration with the relevant professional regulatory body. Those under 23 years of age must satisfy the minimum entry requirements for the degrees in nursing or midwifery.

Fees and Costs

The fee for this module is 400.

Duration and Venue

The module runs from March 30, 2026, to May 1, 2026, with workshop dates scheduled for March 31, April 16, and April 30, 2026. The venue is the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC, Cork.
