Program Overview

Introduction to the MA Chinese - Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages

The MA Chinese - Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) is a postgraduate program offered by the University College Cork (UCC). This program aims to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and professional competencies required to teach Chinese effectively to speakers of other languages in various contexts globally and in Ireland.

Course Outline

The MA TCSOL program combines theory with hands-on practice. Students develop an understanding of key issues in teaching Chinese as a linguistic system to various learners and become familiar with recent research and publications on theory and practice in teaching Chinese. The program includes modules such as:

  • A Linguistic Introduction to Chinese
  • English for Academic Study
  • Advanced Chinese for TCSOL Teachers
  • Introduction to Teaching Practice
  • From Pedagogical Theory to Effective Classroom
  • Teaching Practice Internship
  • Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages: A Pedagogical Grammar
  • Postgraduate Research Skills
  • Dissertation in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages

Course Practicalities

This is a 12-month program (24 months part-time). UCC semesters run from September to early December and January to March/early April, with 12 teaching weeks per semester. Taught modules are typically 3 hours per week in the classroom, while language modules will involve up to 6 hours per week.

Why Choose This Course

The program has a good balance between theory and practice inside and outside of the campus. Students learn SLA theory, language teaching methods, and the knowledge of the Irish education system. They are given presentations from experienced language teachers in Ireland and are arranged to observe different levels of Chinese classes in UCC and the French classes in secondary schools.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a Second Class Honours Grade II in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) or equivalent in a relevant subject area such as Chinese or Asian Studies. Fluency in Chinese (minimum HSK level 5 or equivalent) is required. Applicants whose first language is not Chinese should hold an HSK (Hŕny Shupíng Koshi/Chinese Proficiency Test) Level 5 certificate (or certified equivalent).

Fees and Costs

The EU fee for this course is Full-time: 8,400 Part-time: 4,800. The Non-EU fee for this course is 19,900.

How to Apply

To apply, check the opening and closing dates for the application process, gather supporting documents, and apply online through the UCC online application portal. A non-refundable 50 application fee applies.

Skills and Careers Information

The market for Chinese language teachers is expanding rapidly as China becomes increasingly active on the world stage. An MA TCSOL from UCC can be a passport to employment as a Chinese language teaching professional not just in Ireland but anywhere in the world. While there is no formal pathway to qualified teacher status in Irish schools for teachers of Chinese, the MA TCSOL offers a prestigious prior qualification in this area, which will open many teaching opportunities in Ireland and further afield.

Graduate Testimonials

Graduates of the program have praised its balance of theory and practice, its experienced and supportive lecturers, and the opportunities it provides for professional development and networking. They have gone on to work as Chinese language teachers in various contexts, including schools, universities, and language institutes, both in Ireland and internationally.
