Outline
This module focuses on how to ensure that effective use is made of data from water quality monitoring programmes. Statistical techniques are demonstrated using freely available software. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are introduced for data storage, analysis and presentation. Statistical analyses and the associated presentation of the results are illustrated with worked examples. Key elements of a water quality assessment are presented.
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- Evaluate and recommend different data handling and storage options for water quality data
- Use freely available data storage and analysis software
- Select examples of scenarios where GIS software is appropriate to store and analyse geographically referenced water quality data
- Select and demonstrate appropriate methods for presenting water quality data from a range of water bodies

Practicalities

Requirements
- A BSc in Environmental Science or similar subject
- A relevant professional qualification
- A portfolio of work and experience in the area of water quality monitoring
- Candidates who do not hold a BSc will be judged on a case-by-case basis as to their suitability for the programme, subject to the approval of the college of Science, Engineering and Food Science
- Candidates, for whom English is not their primary language, should possess an IELTS of 6.5 (or TOEFL equivalent) with no less than 6.0 in each individual category
