This is a postgraduate CPD module titled "Advanced Practice in Midwifery NU6154" offered by University College Cork (UCC).
Objectives:
The program aims to:
- Provide students with in-depth, directed, and supported learning in advanced midwifery practice relevant to their specific practice area.
- Facilitate the development of students' clinical knowledge and practice competence to practice at an advanced level within their area of practice.
- Develop core competencies for advanced midwifery practice, including:
- Autonomy in clinical practice
- Expert practice
- Professional and clinical leadership
- Research
- Equip students with the necessary clinical competence to practice at an advanced level in their specific practice area.
Program Description:
The program focuses on gaining competence in the core competencies for advanced midwifery practice. It involves a significant amount of clinical placement (1000 hours), with a substantial portion of the time spent outside the student's own practice area. The specific knowledge and skills requirements are negotiated on an individual practice area basis with the student, their mentor, and their employer/midwife manager within the framework and structure of the course record and assessment booklet.
Assessment:
- No formal written examination.
- Completion of clinical practice hours (1000).
- Documentation of theoretical and clinical learning.
- Sign-off of competencies within the learning record and competency assessment booklet by mentor, preceptors, and course coordinator.
- The record and competency booklet are assessed on a pass/fail basis.
Other:
- Students taking certain modules will be subject to Garda Vetting.
- Students are prohibited from engaging in relevant work placement unless the vetting process has been cleared.
- Application is by special request to the module coordinator.
- Students must have a minimum of 7 years post-registration experience, with at least 5 years in the area of advanced nursing or midwifery practice being pursued.
- Students must demonstrate continuous professional development and have completed a Master's degree.
- Students must provide evidence of support from their employer and a completed Site Self-Declaration Form.
- Students must provide nomination and confirmation of a designated medical practitioner mentor/and or Advanced Nurse or Midwife Practitioner mentor.
- Students must contact their Director of Nursing/Midwifery/Public Health/authorized Nurse Manager to discuss the identified need for advanced nursing or midwifery practice in their practice area/organization.
