The Postgraduate Diploma in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is a 9-month program designed to provide comprehensive training in GIS, spatial data science, and cloud-based computing. Upon completion, students will have acquired new and high-demand skills in GIS and spatial data science.

The program is delivered in a blended format, combining live online classes, online recordings, and face-to-face teaching where possible. It consists of four 15-credit modules:

  • GG6542 Fundamentals of GIS: This module covers key concepts in GIS and the application of GIS skillsets.
  • GG6543 Programming for GIS: This module provides a practical introduction to programming applied to GIS.
  • GG6544 Cloud-Based GIS: This module focuses on internet GIS geospatial analysis and mapping.
  • GG6545 Geographic Data Science: This module explores Geographic Data Science applications and solutions.

Teaching:

The program is delivered in the Department of Geography's GIS laboratories, with lectures and practical sessions live-streamed and recorded. The program also features collaborations with department experts and invited speakers, providing students with exposure to a wide array of geoinformatics applications.

  • The MSc is not funded as part of the HCI Pillar 1 initiative and applicants will be required to self-fund this Master’s (MSc) degree.
  • The cost for the 30-credit MSc component is €2,885.
  • The MSc in Geographical Information Systems is a full-time program comprising a dissertation worth 30 credits (GG6546) carried out over a six-month period during one academic year.
  • There are no compulsory placement requirements as part of the course, but students are encouraged to seek opportunities to develop their skills in a commercial environment or with their employer.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must have a Second Class Honours Grade 2 in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8).


Under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applicants who do not meet the above academic entry requirements may be considered for admission and will be assessed on a number of factors including:
