Outline

Module Objective

To introduce postgraduate students to leadership skills to enable them to take ownership of their post-graduate project and prepare them for accelerated professional progression after graduation.


Module Content

This course will provide an introduction to the basic theories of professional leadership including transformational leadership practices. Additionally, concepts of workplace personality, motivation in research, time management, objective setting and goal setting will be covered. The course will include elements of relevant theory, psychometric tests, group work and tool kit development.


Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:


  • Articulate the qualities and skills of leadership and the value of effective communication
  • Define the characteristics of strong leadership in the Agri-Food sector in academia, industry and governance
  • Evaluate different approaches to developing effective relationships, building trust, and personal impact and reputation
  • Assess their personal leadership qualities and implement their personal development plan for their own leadership journey
  • Construct SMART(ER) goals using a SWOT analysis approach
  • Compare and contrast motivational theories and relate these to their personal research motivation

Requirements

  • Candidates must be holders of an honours BSc degree, or equivalent qualification, in a discipline with a significant element Food or Agricultural Science, with a minimum of second class honours Grade 2 or equivalent.
  • Candidates should be concurrently registered (or intending to register) for a Research Degree programme (e.g. MRes, MSc or PhD).
