The MSc in Government and Politics is an interdisciplinary taught master's programme that provides graduates with the expertise and work experience required for successful careers in public policy environments.

Course Outline

The focus of the MSc Government and Politics is on governance, examining issues such as developments in democratic theory, regulatory reform, and international relations. The programme also explores contemporary policy debates at various levels, including political reform in the Irish context, European governance, and the challenges faced by democracy and human rights in the 21st century.

Course Structure

The MSc programme is divided into two parts. In Part I, students take a combination of compulsory and elective modules, including:

  • European Democracy, Citizenship, Memory, and Identity (5 credits)
  • EU Political System and Policies (5 credits)
  • Political Science Research Methods (10 credits)
  • Comparative Political Institutions (5 credits)
  • Politics and Gender (5 credits)
  • Re-imagining Democratic Politics in a Changing World (5 credits)
  • Core Themes in Political Philosophy (5 credits)

In Part II, students choose between a research-based dissertation (GV6106) and a work-based dissertation (GV6123), which includes a work placement in a national policy environment.

The taught part of the course runs from mid-September to the end of March, with approximately 8-10 hours of lectures and seminars per week. The work placement typically lasts four months, and students are supported in sourcing and applying for placements through the Work Placement Officer.
