Outline
This module describes the essential aspects of the physical, chemical and biological interactions in surface waters, that are necessary for designing an effective monitoring and assessment programme and for interpretation of the results.
Key features of successful assessment programmes will be identified.
Potential approaches to analysing and presenting surface water quality data will be evaluated.
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Describe the key climatological and geographical influences on form and function of surface water systems
- Identify influences of natural catchment features and human activities on chemical and biological characteristics in surface waters
- Select examples that illustrate how river hydrology and lake form and function can influence the design of a monitoring programme and the interpretation of monitoring results

Requirements
- A BSc in Environmental Science or similar subject
- A relevant professional qualification
- A portfolio of work and experience in the area of water quality monitoring
- Candidates who do not hold a BSc will be judged on a case-by-case basis as to their suitability for the programme, subject to the approval of the college of Science, Engineering and Food Science
- Candidates, for whom English is not their primary language, should possess an IELTS of 6.5 (or TOEFL equivalent) with no less than 6.0 in each individual category
