Humanities and Social Sciences International Foundation Pathway: Certificate of Higher Education

The Humanities and Social Sciences International Foundation Pathway: Certificate of Higher Education is designed to prepare students for undergraduate study in humanities and social sciences related degrees. This program develops English language skills and provides a thorough grounding in academic study skills.

Entry Requirements

• IELTS: 4.5 / 5.0
• UCAS International Equivalents (48 entry tariff)
• 5 GCSE / GCSE passes at grade C/4 or in an international equivalent

Modules

The program consists of the following modules:

• English: London as Global City (30 credits)
• Data Analysis and Research Skills (30 credits)
• Introduction to Social Sciences (30 credits)
• Crime, Law and Society (30 credits)

Module Details

English: London as Global City

This module develops core English language skills to the level required for undergraduate study. Through study visits across London and introductions to key academic skills and concepts, students improve their skills and knowledge.

Data Analysis and Research Skills

This module develops research, numeracy, and information technology skills. Students investigate primary and secondary research, conduct their own research project, and demonstrate findings through data analysis.

Introduction to Social Sciences

This module supports a broad exploration of social understanding across various sources. Students critically engage with how disability, gender, and race are represented and viewed, ensuring projects and research reflect a variation of perspectives.

Crime, Law and Society

This module explores crime and law and their integration within society. Students analyze topics, critically engaging with representations and views of disability, gender, and race in relation to crime and law.

Skills

Students develop English language and academic skills, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing, and gain a basic understanding of using English for academic purposes. They are introduced to sociology concepts and gain a broad understanding of the relationship between crime and its social and legal context.

Learning

Students are taught via lectures, seminars, and workshops by passionate and committed academic staff. Regular contact with academic guidance tutors helps students develop, with face-to-face and online careers and study support available.

Assessment

Assessments prepare students for life beyond university, including coursework, reports, essays, group and individual presentations, comparative and reflective essays, multiple-choice exams, oral exams, portfolios, case studies, and blogs.

Degree Pathways

Upon completing the International Foundation Pathway, students can apply to their chosen undergraduate degree. Available courses include History, History and English, International Relations and Economics, Journalism, Politics and International Relations, and Politics, International Relations and History.
