Acute and Emergency Care

The Institute of Health and Allied Professions at NTU offers a comprehensive suite of continuous professional development (CPD) courses that have been designed and developed to meet the needs of the local health sector workforce.


About this Course

This course has been designed to support practitioners working in acute care settings, and also those working with patients with acute and emergency presentations in community and primary care settings. You will develop critical specialist knowledge and skills in the field of acute and emergency care. You'll be enabled to effectively assess and manage patients within acute care settings to provide person-centred care to individuals with complex conditions.

Module Information

Here's a breakdown of what you'll be studying throughout the course:


Core Modules

  • Fundamentals in Emergency and Acute Medicine: This module will focus on the contemporary fundamental concepts in Acute Medicine and Emergency Care. Learners will develop their core knowledge and critical thinking skills within these specialities.
  • Developing Acute and Emergency Care: After completing the Fundamentals in Emergency and Acute medicine, learners on this module will focus on Developing Acute and Emergency Care. Emphasis will be placed on gaining the critical knowledge and enhanced skills required for developing expertise and confidence in this area.

Optional Modules

  • Leadership in Nursing, Health & Social Care Practice: The module will consider contemporary leadership theory, policy and research and will engage learners in critical reflection on their leadership approach.
  • Maintaining Function and Quality of Life in the Frail Person: This module aims to develop a critical understanding of reablement, person-centred care and the wider determinants of health.
  • Understanding, Identifying, Assessing and Managing Frailty: This module aims to develop a critical understanding of the pathophysiology of ageing, concepts of frailty and the comprehensive geriatric assessment.

How you're Taught

Delivery Mode

The teaching strategy is multi-modal and adopts a blended approach, with a clear commitment to face-to-face teaching and learning supported by online learning materials, small group discussions, presentations and practical exercises.


Clinical Area

Students should work within an appropriate healthcare setting while studying this course. This will enable students to reflect on their current practice and apply the knowledge and skills that are learned throughout the course.

Entry Requirements

UK Students

  • MSc and PGCert qualification: Applicants will be registered health professionals currently practicing in an appropriate acute care setting. Candidates will be required to evidence previous study at Level 6, or the ability to study at Level 7.
  • BSc and ProfCert qualification: Applicants will be registered health professionals currently practicing in an appropriate acute care setting.

International Students

Unfortunately, this course is not available for international students.


Fees and Funding

UK Students

  • ProfCert and PGCert: £2,700 (for courses starting between September 2025 and March 2026), £2,750 (for courses starting between September 2026 and March 2027)
  • BSc: £5,000 (for courses starting between September 2025 and March 2026), £5,100 (for courses starting between September 2026 and March 2027)
  • Postgraduate Diploma: £5,400 (for courses starting between September 2025 and March 2026), £5,530 (for courses starting between September 2026 and March 2027)
  • MSc: £8,100 (for courses starting between September 2025 and March 2026), £8,300 (for courses starting between September 2026 and March 2027)

Additional Costs

  • Textbooks and library books: Your modules will point you to key textbooks and recommended reading.
  • Printing and photocopying costs: The University allocates an annual printing and copying allowance of £20 depending on the course you are studying.
