This MSc Material and Technology Futures program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to navigate and apply materials, technologies, and systems thinking to tackle current and future challenges. - Culture and Collaboration (20 Credits): This module provides an immersive learning experience where students delve into the cultural context driving current and future work. Students hone advanced skills in research, critical thinking, and communication while collaborating with peers on a negotiated theme, contributing to a collective celebration of innovative ideas in art and design theory and practice.
- Material and Technology Enquiry (40 Credits): This module explores the scope of materials and technology to extend and expand students' knowledge and identify their future approach and direction. Students reflect on concepts, theoretical frameworks, research methods, and practical experience with materials and technology, collaborating on novel solutions to problems and challenges. Students develop novel prototypes, theoretical frameworks, or speculative outcomes that shift material and technological applications forward for the benefit of people, planet, and profit. They also develop impactful communication methods to share their ideas with a variety of audiences and support their future direction and ambitions.
Optional Modules:
- Advancing Research Design: Maximising Your Methods (20 Credits): This interdisciplinary module offers students an exploratory platform if they intend to use their course for further research-based studies, expand their research method knowledge, or contemplate PhD-level study. It aims to help students apply and critique diverse research methods, develop coherent research designs, and grasp the significance of their work in art and design research, fostering innovative thinking and calculated risk-taking for new knowledge creation beyond the module.
- Professional Futures (20 Credits): This multi-disciplinary module provides an explorative platform for students who want to use their course as the basis for further research-based study, extend their knowledge of research methods and methodologies to enhance their future professional practice, or are considering progression to PhD level study.
Teaching:
The program's timetable is built around four distinct sessions:
- Research workshops: Group sessions for discussion, practical exercises, and learning about research methodologies required at the postgraduate level.
- Tutorials/Technical Supervision: Group and individual tutorials focusing on developing critical thinking skills, engaging in critical discussion, and preparing work for discussion.
- Skills workshops: Practical sessions exploring relevant practices and procedures for careers in the industry, allowing students to personalize their learning experience by selecting sessions that meet their career aspirations.
- Guest presentations: Delivered by alumni and employers within the sector.
Assessment:
The program utilizes a strategic formative assessment approach throughout each module, building students' skills and confidence. This scaffolded approach allows for experimentation and risk-taking, supporting different learning styles and enabling opportunities to demonstrate skills and abilities in a wider range of contexts. Postgraduate loans
The government introduced a new postgraduate loans scheme in the 2016/17 academic year for Masters degrees. The loan will be a contribution towards the costs of study and it will be at the student's discretion to use the loan towards fees, maintenance costs or other costs.
