This course is encouraging and gently challenging. It’s aimed at those interested in drawing and mark-making using different tools and materials.

  • Methodical Approach: Follow a methodical approach to achieve freedom in drawing.
  • History of Mark Making: Examine the history of mark making, from tribal crafts to contemporary design.
  • Exercises: Complete exercises experimenting with tools and materials.
  • Sensory Exploration: Explore mark-making using all senses.
  • Movement and Mark Making: Record mark-making through movement, from the miniscule to the full body stretch.
  • Rhythm, Repetition, and Change: Create marks using rhythm, repetition, and small changes.
  • Intention, Intuition, and Memory: Engage with intention, intuition, instinct, and memory.
  • Drawing Beginnings: Turn simple marks into the beginnings of a drawing.

  • In-Person Instruction: The course is taught in person on NTU's city campus.
  • Tutor Profile: Jane Lavender, with over 30 years of experience in art and design disciplines, including site-specific design projects, textiles, lighting, and more.
  • She completed her MA in Contemporary Craft Practice at Nottingham Trent University in 2014, exploring the energy of making and the signature of the body.
