Program Overview
This pre-sessional language course in Civil Engineering prepares students for Masters-level study through tailored academic English instruction, immersion in UK academia, and community-building opportunities. Program Outline
The course aims to:
- Provide students with the opportunity to experience and adapt to study in the UK ahead of their degree.
- Familiarize students with the University facilities such as libraries, study spaces, and learning platforms.
- Help students settle into Leeds before their Masters begins.
- Facilitate students to meet other students and build a community of peers. The course focuses on developing academic reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in the context of civil engineering. Students will be taught by expert language teachers who will introduce them to the language, texts, and practices they will engage with during their Masters degree.
Outline:
The curriculum for this pre-sessional course is developed in collaboration with the School of Civil Engineering and is informed by research in English language teaching. Students will focus closely on the skills they will need for their subject area, studying with students progressing to degrees in the field of civil engineering.
Course Structure:
The course is structured around a series of language classes and seminars. Students will have the chance to listen to introductory academic lectures or take part in practical sessions, exploring different themes over six weeks. They will work on understanding this content and the language used, along with core texts.
Learning and Teaching:
Students will learn how to use language appropriate for their degree to express their thoughts and ideas effectively. They will be taught in classes, lectures, or practical sessions and group seminars. Students will work individually and with others. Independent study is an important element of this course, allowing students to practice their skills, deepen their knowledge, and prepare for their degree. Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to think critically.
Assessment:
The course uses a range of assessment methods, which are likely to include written assignments, speaking assignments, presentations, and research projects.
Teaching:
Students will be taught by expert academics, from lecturers through to professors.
Other:
- The course is accredited by BALEAP.
- Students can take part in workshops, language groups, and language advice drop-ins.
- Classes normally take place between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday.
- Teaching will take place on the University of Leeds campus.
- The Language Centre provides a weekly program of optional social activities during this course. Some of these are free, and some have a cost, normally no more than £30.
- Accommodation is not included in the tuition fee.
- The minimum age for students studying on this course is 18 years old.

- MSc (Eng) International Construction Management and Engineering
- IELTS: Minimum overall score of 6.0, with one component allowed below 6.0 at 5.5 (this can be listening or speaking). No components below 5.5.
- If your Masters requires an overall IELTS score of 6.5:
- IELTS: Minimum overall score of 6.0, with one component allowed below 6.0. No components below 5.5.
- If your Masters requires an overall IELTS score of 7.0:
- IELTS: Minimum overall score of 6.5, with one component allowed below 6.5. No components below 6.0.
- Minimum Age: 18 years old.
