Degree Overview:
This program is a 10-week full-time pre-sessional Masters course designed to improve academic English language skills for students pursuing Masters degrees in social science and arts, specifically media and communication. The program aims to:
- Enhance academic English skills relevant to media and communication.
- Prepare students for the academic demands of studying in the UK.
- Familiarize students with the University of Leeds facilities, including libraries, study spaces, and learning platforms.
- Help students settle into Leeds before their Masters program begins.
- Foster a community of peers by connecting students with others. The program focuses on developing academic reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills within the context of media and communication. It is taught by expert language teachers who introduce students to the language, texts, and practices they will encounter during their Masters degree.
Outline:
The curriculum is developed in collaboration with the academic faculty and informed by research in English language teaching. The program is structured into two phases:
- First four weeks: Focus on improving general academic English language skills for postgraduate study in social science and arts.
- Final six weeks: Focus on skills specific to media, communication, and language degrees. Students will attend introductory academic lectures exploring various themes over six weeks. They will work on understanding the content and language used, along with core texts, through language classes and seminars.

Teaching:
- Teaching methods: The program employs a combination of classes, lectures, practical sessions, group seminars, and independent study.
- Faculty: The program is taught by expert academics, including lecturers, professors, industry professionals with extensive experience, and trained postgraduate researchers.
- Unique approaches: The Language Centre provides a weekly program of optional social activities, some free and some with a cost (typically no more than £30). Students have access to the Language Zone, a study and resource center equipped with computers, books, magazines, audio and video resources. Workshops, language groups, and language advice drop-ins are also available.

- The Language Centre contributes to academic research in language teaching, which informs the course content.
- The program is designed to help students get the most out of their studies.
- The minimum age for students is 18 years old.
- All learning materials are included in the tuition fee.
