Drones for Construction (Certificate L7, 10 ECTS)
Course Overview
The aim of the module is to provide learners with the relevant knowledge and skills in the operations of on-site procedures in this particular sector, and aircraft technical and maintenance specifications. Learners will build their knowledge of flight limitations and emergency procedures and develop skills to ensure safe and efficient use of Drone captured data with training in drone flight operations.
This programme aimed at people interested in the development of drone skills, especially those who are involved in construction projects.
Entry Requirements
- A level 6 qualification or equivalent is required.
- Applicants who do not meet these requirements but who are aged 23 and over will be considered for entry on the basis of an assessment and, if appropriate, also an interview.
- Equivalence can be demonstrated by an appropriate qualification and significant relevant experience in the construction industry.

HCI Pillar 3 Funding
- Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for the HCI Pillar 3 funding, as set out by the HEA.
- We would encourage you to read the criteria prior to making an application, to ensure you are eligible to apply.
English Language
- Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements.
- For entry to undergraduate courses, a score of 5.5 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required.
- For postgraduate courses, a score of 6.0 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required.

Semester 1
- Fundamentals of Drone Operations
- Introduction to drones
- EU and National Regulations
- Legal and safety obligations
- Pre-flight planning
- Risk assessments and on-site procedures
Semester 2
- Drone Skills Acquisition
- Drone Pilot Registration with IAA Accreditation
- Simulated pilot training skills
- Surveys, data collection, and storage
- Flight training for Competency Test
Delivery
- Tuesdays and Thursday evening online lectures 19.00-21.00hrs fortnightly
- Full day Face to face practical workshops and site visits on Fridays or Saturday (TBC)
Time Commitment
- Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours.
- Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college.
Assessment
- Assessment will be through a range of continuous assessments, which will involve:
- Case Studies
- Online Quizzes
- Project Reports
- Final Project
Qualification
- Certificate in Drones for Construction (Special Purpose Award, L7, 10 ECTS)
Fees
- €1,250 HCI Pillar 3 Funded – Student pays €250
- All students will be required to complete an Open A2 (UAS Remote Pilot Competency Certificate) during the programme – this is a requirement for remote pilots operations of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Cost – €149
