Program Overview


Advanced Vehicle Diagnostics and Electrical Systems (Certificate, L7, 10 ECTS)

Course Overview

This module is designed to offer automotive industry personnel the opportunity to acquire knowledge of new vehicle technology and to enhance fault diagnostic skills. It includes key areas relevant to upskilling for modern vehicles, such as Advanced Driver-assistance systems (ADAS), Hybrid/BEV vehicle systems (EV) and Automotive Communication Networks (Multiplexing).


Entry Requirements

  • Candidates who hold a Senior Trade Certificate and/or National Craft Certificate and/or Advanced Certificate Craft with appropriate endorsements or examination attainments in an Automotive area will be considered for entry.
  • Holders of a National/Higher Certificate (Level 6) in Engineering or Technology may be considered for admission to this programme.
  • Candidates applying as mature applicants may be required to attend an interview and may be requested to take an aptitude test to prove their suitability for a place on this programme.

Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) – Assessment

English Language Requirements

  • Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements.
  • For entry to undergraduate courses, a score of 5.5 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required.
  • For postgraduate courses, a score of 6.0 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required.

Course Content

Semester 1

  • Electronic control unit (ECU) DATA analysis
  • Supplementary restraint systems (SRS)
  • Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS)
  • Electrical system wiring circuits
  • Automotive Communication Networks
  • Vehicle Brake systems (ABS)
  • Hybrid / BEV vehicle systems

Delivery

  • The programme will be delivered in a blended learning format over 10 weeks.
  • Online classes: 3 hours one evening per week (Thursdays) + 1 hour Portfolio for 10 weeks from 7-10 pm commencing Thursday 18th September 2025.
  • In-person practical workshops: 2 full days at TUS Coonagh Campus (dates to be confirmed).

Time Commitment

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours.
  • Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college.

Assessment

  • This module will be assessed through 100% continuous assessment.
  • Students will complete seven written assignments / case study/ report/ short questions/ and one garage practical portfolio.

  • Certificate in Advanced Vehicle Diagnostics and Electrical Systems (Special Purpose Award, Level 7, 10 ECTS)

  • €1,250
  • This programme has secured part funding through Limerick Chamber Skillnet.
  • To qualify for the reduced fee of €875, you must:
    • Be employed by an Irish registered company or be a sole trader registered in Ireland
    • Your employer must pay the training fee of €875 as Limerick Chamber Skillnet can only fund/invoice companies or sole traders, not individuals.
    • Your employer must not be state or semi-state funded or a charity.
