Course Overview

This unit enables the candidate to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully machine by Computer Numerical Control (CNC). This programme is focused on programming 3-axis CNC milling and 2-axis lathe work. It includes part-programming, preparation of the machine, selection and the preparing of the required methods of work holding, the selection and the correct mounting of tooling. It also covers the operations required and safe working practices to complete the machining operations.


Entry Requirements

  • Completed Leaving Certificate or Equivalent
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment desirable using Lathes and Mills
  • Ability to read and interpret Engineering drawings is required

Module Outline

Course Content

This course is primarily focused on the programming of CNC machines. Students will programme using ISO G-Codes for milling and turning and a basic introduction to Siemens conversational Milling programming. Preparation of the machine, Selection and the preparing of the required methods of work holding, Selection and the correct mounting of tooling, Calculation of Speeds and Feeds are key components of this course.


Programming of CNC milling machines and CNC lathes forms part of this programme. A small number of parts will be produced during the course of this programme. It also covers the operations required and safe working practices to complete the machining operations.

  • Transcript of the result achieved will be issued by City and Guilds to successful candidates (City & Guilds Award)

Fees

  • €1250 fees, payable to TUS
  • Additional City & Guilds International Examination and Registration Fee, approximately €250, payable to the Exams Office mid-way through the programme

  • This programme has been approved for Next Level Skillnet ESF+ funding
  • Eligible applicants can avail of up to 50% funding
  • To be eligible, a company must be paying the fees for their employee, and they should be a private company based in Ireland
  • Next Level Skillnet can also fund Sole Traders
