Transport Safety Management (Certificate, L7, 10 ECTS)
Course Overview
This Transport Safety Management module provides a comprehensive understanding of the principles, practices, and strategies involved in ensuring safety within the transportation sector. This module encompasses various modes of transportation, including road, air, rail, maritime, and public transit. The aim of this module is to address the need to provide learners with Safety and Environmental awareness and knowledge when dealing with vehicle drivers, vehicles, warehousing and vehicle maintenance facilities, along with the Regulatory Compliance, Ethics and Legal Requirements associated with these Safety Practices.
Entry Requirements
- Normally a level 6 in a cognitive area or suitable transport industry experience gained while working in the transport industry which could be verified through RPL.
- Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) – Assessment: Please review the academic entry requirements for this programme. If you do not hold these qualifications but would like your application to be assessed under RPL please select YES on the online application form.
- ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a minimum score of 5.5 in an IELTS exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a minimum of 6.0 is required.
Module Outline
Content
- Secure a load on a commercial vehicle according to national and international standards
- By identifying and assessing safety risks associated with transportation operations and developing appropriate mitigation strategies, the learner will be able to put in place a system of safety maintenance and inspection of transport, warehousing, vehicles and organising safe places of work in line with the vehicles’ propulsion methods.
- By interpreting and complying with relevant safety regulations and standards applicable to different modes of transportation, the learner will be able to organise a place of work which provides the best practice of occupational health and welfare for transport employees.
- Apply human factors principles to enhance the safety culture, reduce human error, and improve operational safety.
- Implement safe and cost-effective route planning procedures and evaluate the effectiveness of safety management systems through performance monitoring and analysis.
- Administer correctly Transport related Contract and Employment law, which incorporates Compliance, Ethics and Legal Requirements associated with these procedures.
- Prepare written emergency procedures inline with UN convention on the transport of the carriage of dangerous goods by road.
- Develop emergency response plans and crisis management strategies to effectively address transportation incidents.
Delivery
- The programme will be delivered online over a period of 12 weeks, live on Tuesdays 7-9pm, commencing Tuesday 16th September 2025.
- All online sessions will be recorded.
Time Commitment
- Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning hours.
- Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college.

- Assessment methods may include:
- Written assignments analysing safety regulations and case studies.
- Group projects develop safety management plans for specific transportation scenarios.
- Presentations demonstrate understanding of safety risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
- Examinations assessed knowledge of safety management principles and practices.

- This programme has secured part funding through CILT Mobility & Supply Chain Skillnet which provides upskilling for businesses in the logistics, transport, and supply chain sectors. The subsidised cost of this programme via CILT is €935 from €1,250.
