Quality Management & Statistics (Certificate, L7, 20 ECTS)

Course Overview

The aim of the Certificate in Quality Management & Statistics is to provide students with the basic skills necessary to work in the area of Quality within the healthcare, (bio) pharmaceutical medical devices and allied industries, specifically the Management of Quality with the aid of statistical methodologies like lean Six Sigma in those industries. It is aimed at upskilling learners who aspire to supervisory or management roles and/or who need an understanding of Lean Six Sigma (at Yellow Belt Level).


Entry Requirements

  • QQI Level 6 award, or equivalent qualification in business/engineering or science, and/or relevant life and work experience.
  • Applicants may also be eligible for entry according to LIT’s Recognition of Prior Learning procedures.
  • English Language: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a score of 5.5 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a score of 6.0 in an IELTS or equivalent exam is required.

Course Content

Semester 1

  • Statistics and Lean Six Sigma for Quality Management
    • Learners will be able to utilise statistical methods for handling, analysing and interpreting data; demonstrate proficiency in creation and interpretation of control charts; Describe tools and techniques required to measure, control and improve processes spanning the product lifecycle; and demonstrate knowledge of six sigma and lean manufacturing.
  • Quality Management Practices
    • Learners will be able to demonstrate a detailed knowledge, show experience and understanding of quality management principles and methods used in business to achieve results and customer satisfaction; quality management philosophies, strategic planning, leadership, team dynamics, communication, employee engagement, creative thinking, innovation, brain storming and management of change

Semester 2

  • Quality Management Project
    • The learner will select and research a topic in a relevant area of Quality Management; plan, undertake and manage a project within a specified timeframe using limited resources; Apply the appropriate tools, methods, techniques and technologies in the solution of the problem and the management of the project in accordance with relevant regulatory standards; critically analyse the results of the project and make comprehensive recommendations if further work is necessary on the project or to improve the solution; and produce a clear, concise thesis document detailing all work done in accordance with currently accepted standards and make a final oral presentation on project progress and conclusions.

Time Commitment

  • Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college.

Assessment

  • The modules in semester 1 and semester 2 will be assessed by a combination of Continuous Assessment and Final Examination papers Online.

Fees

  • This programme is Springboard+ funded in 2025. Successful applicants in employment will qualify for 90% Springboard+ funding & will be liable for the balance of the 10% fee of €200. Successful applicants on a qualifying DSP payment will qualify for 100% funding.

They will plan, manage, and execute a project within a specified timeframe and resource constraints. The module emphasizes applying appropriate tools, methods, techniques, and technologies to solve problems and manage projects in accordance with relevant regulatory standards. A final oral presentation on project progress and conclusions is also required.

  • The program is delivered entirely online, combining live and pre-recorded lectures accessible through the virtual learning platform Moodle.
  • Induction sessions familiarize participants with Moodle, MS Teams, Zoom, and other college-specific resources.

  • 15 weeks (September 2024 - December 2024)
  • Mondays: 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
  • Wednesdays: 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
  • Semester 2:
  • 15 weeks (January 2025 - May 2025)
