Course Overview
This is a one year common entry programme to the four honours degree programmes in the Built Environment. Successful completion of this Common Entry Year will entitle the student to progress into Year 2 of the following programmes, subject to availability of places:
- BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying
- BSc (Hons) in Property Valuation & Management
- BSc (Hons) in Construction Management
- BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering Management
This programme is offered on the CAO in addition to the four existing Level 8 honours degrees in the Department of the Built Environment. The Common Entry Year has been developed in order to advance the Transitions Agenda being pursued in Irish Higher Education, of better transition from second level to third level education.
This programme aims to give the student the first stage of an academically challenging educational experience, that will enable the student to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies to serve both the construction industry and society, in whichever specialisation within the industry they progress to study in years 2, 3 and 4 of the Honours Degree programmes in the Department of the Built Environment.
Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate
- A minimum of 2 H5 & 4 O6/H7 grades in six Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English or Irish.
Mature Applicants
- Candidates applying as mature applicants may be required to attend an interview and may be requested to take an aptitude test to prove their suitability for a place on this programme.
International Applicants
- International applicants should apply directly to the International Office at TUS, allowing plenty of time for completing the visa process. Applications for September start should be made by 1st June at the latest to ensure visas are processed in time. You should familiarise yourself with visa processing times for your country of origin to ensure you make a timely application.
Course Modules
Year 1
- Construction Technology (10 credits)
- This module aims to convey the principals of technology, practice and materials involved in domestic building construction.
- Services, Sustainability and Environmental Design (5 credits)
- Introduction to Built Environment Studies (15 credits)
- This module introduces the student to the following discipline areas within the construction sector: Measurement, Concrete & Soils, Property Valuations and Planning.
- This module also aims:
- To provide the student with a fundamental knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of core and developing professions within the Built Environment.
- To develop a student’s appreciation of the core themes and challenges within the Built Environment and the supporting and distinct roles played by the relevant professions.
- To develop the students ability in standard system of measuring building work, the relationship between measurement and cost through to the measurement and calculation of key elements of small domestic buildings of simple design.
- Foundation in property valuations
- Introduction to the concept of property valuation and the methods used to value residential and commercial property.
- Introduction to the knowledge and understanding of the mathematics required for property valuations
- Economics for Construction & Property Specialists (10 credits)
- This module sets out to develop an understanding of the concepts and principles of economic theory in the context of the construction / property environment.
- Research & Technical Skills (5 credits)
- Built Environment Law (5 credits)
- The aim of this module is to prepare the learner for the legal realities surrounding built environment practice.
- Engineering Mathematics (5 credits)
- Introduction to mathematics and mathematical applications required in the management of construction and civil engineering projects.
- Engineering Surveying (5 credits)
- The aim of this module is to develop a foundation understanding of the principles of engineering surveying, intermediate knowledge of the methods and procedures used on site.
