Degree Overview:

This Level 8 program aims to produce graduates with comprehensive analytical and rounded business skills, perfectly blended to solve business problems using appropriate computer software solutions. The fusion of Business with Computing allows students to achieve maximum learning and self-development. Students will advance their business information technology knowledge, experience, and skills through extensive practical assignments and coursework. Gaining proficiency in the different dimensions of computing and business will provide graduates with the necessary skills for a stable career. The program offers students the opportunity to gain Professional Computing Certification (Microsoft) as part of their studies, as well as a six-month work placement opportunity in Year 3.

Year 1 - Semester 1:

  • Introduction To Financial Accounting (Credits: 5): Identifies the fundamentals of financial accounting and applies these principles to produce the financial information required by modern business organizations.
  • Business Communication And Analysis (Credits: 5): Introduces learners to the communication process and the essentials of effective business communication, including verbal, non-verbal, and written communication.
  • Business Mathematics (Credits: 5): Provides learners with the fundamentals of business mathematics in areas such as graph drawing and interpretation, algebra and its business applications, probability, and financial mathematics including investment appraisal.
  • Introduction To Business Databases (Credits: 5): Introduces relational database concepts and the implementation of a simple relational database on MS Access.
  • Management Principles (Credits: 5): Investigates the environmental context of management, examines the theory supporting management practice, and explores key management functions and the skills needed for managerial success.
  • Introduction To Web Development (Credits: 5): Introduces learners to the fundamentals involved in the development of web pages.

Year 1 - Semester 2:

  • Financial Accounting (Credits: 5): Further develops financial accounting principles and concepts and applies them to produce the financial information required by modern business organizations.
  • Business Database Development (Credits: 5): Advances learners' knowledge of Database Development and introduces them to SQL Language.
  • Responsive Web Development (Credits: 5): Provides learners with the skills required to design and develop a responsive website for a business.
  • Organisational Behaviour (Credits: 5): Provides an introduction to the organizational setting and dynamic and examines the role of management as an integrating activity.
  • It offers an integrated view embracing both theory and practice and covers the broad range of influences that drive organizational behavior.
  • Statistical Methods for Business (Credits: 5): Provides learners with the fundamentals of statistics and how they can be applied in business.

Year 2 - Semester 1:

  • Business Law Fundamentals (Credits: 5): Equips learners with an understanding of the legal and regulatory issues involved in Business Law.
  • It aims to provide knowledge of the legal system and principles of tort law and contract law.
  • Cost Accounting (Credits: 5): Provides a comprehensive understanding of the importance of cost accounting principles in the business process.
  • Learners acquire competencies in costing that can be applied to all business environments.
  • Commercial Databases Theory (Credits: 5): Demonstrates knowledge of the management of a database system.

  • Workplace Effectiveness (Credits: 5): Explores the nature of work and human behavior through the dual lens of workplace psychology and personal effectiveness.
  • It focuses on the work-based performance of individual workers and groups and analyzes the influences and effects of their work environment. The module promotes critical reflection and self-awareness of learners to enhance their personal effectiveness and develop appropriate professional responses to workplace challenges.

Year 3 - Semester 2:

  • Work Placement/Study Abroad (Credits: 30): Offers students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills gained throughout their course of study in a new and relevant experiential setting.
  • This component facilitates the development of practical life-skill competencies and communication skills necessary to function effectively in the work environment and wider society.
  • Business Problem Solving (Elective) (Credits: 30): Available as an alternative for students who have not been successful in gaining work placement.
  • This module offers students the opportunity to engage in real-world business problems by participating actively in problem-solving activities related to business issues. It advances the student's ability to problem solve, think critically, and communicate effectively, whether through presentations or written reports.

Year 4 - Semester 1:

  • Company Law (Elective) (Credits: 5): Provides learners with an understanding of the fundamentals of Irish Company Law.
  • Digital Marketing (Credits: 5): Ensures students can coherently discuss digital marketing within the context of a business environment.
  • This module explores digital marketing through a number of lenses, including the marketing environment, digital advertising and social media, marketing communications, and SEO. It provides students with the opportunity to develop and practice digital marketing competencies and gain greater understanding and confidence in the area of digital marketing.
  • Enterprise Software (Credits: 5): Provides an in-depth understanding of the role of computers in modern industry and an appreciation of the role of Enterprise Software systems.
  • Learners also gain an understanding of the increasing importance of Supply Chain Management in modern business. The practical content involves the use of computer-based problem-solving tools and techniques in addressing everyday business issues to achieve optimal solutions.
  • Financial Management (Elective) (Credits: 5): Enables learners to appreciate the role of the finance department in modern organizations and how they make an essential contribution towards the strategic, tactical, and operational goals of those organizations.
  • Final Year Project (Credits: 10): Consolidates and builds on students' knowledge from previous years in a capstone research report.
  • Students develop research skills, including how to write a research proposal, conduct a literature review, compose a research question, identify appropriate research design, gather and analyze data, and present findings.
  • Strategic Management Concepts (Credits: 5): Introduces students to Strategic Management concepts, methods, and benefits.
  • While introducing the full Strategic Management Process, the focus is on the Formulation Stage.

Year 4 - Semester 2:

  • Advanced European Union Law (Elective) (Credits: 5): Provides an advanced study of EU law.
  • Students focus almost exclusively on primary texts, principally Treaties, Regulations, and Directives, and on case law with a view to understanding the operation of the structures of EU law.
  • Digital Marketing, Analytics & User Experience (UX) (Credits: 5): Ensures students can coherently discuss digital marketing within the context of a business environment.
  • This module explores digital marketing through a number of lenses, including GDPR and data privacy, analytics, user experience, and campaign planning and budgeting. It provides students with the opportunity to develop and practice digital marketing competencies and gain greater understanding and confidence in the area of digital marketing.
  • Advanced Data Analytics (Credits: 5): Addresses advanced topics in data analysis, including trends and future directions.
  • Enterprise Software 2 (Credits: 5): Provides an in-depth understanding of the role of computers in modern industry and proficiency in the use of a commercial Enterprise Resource Planning package.
  • Learners understand the inputs, steps involved, and the desired outputs involved in a range of business processes.
  • Managerial Finance (Elective) (Credits: 5): Acquires advanced management accounting techniques and practices to assist management in the decision-making process.

Entry Requirements:

  • Leaving Certificate: A minimum of 2 H5 & 4 O6/H7 grades in six Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English or Irish.
  • QQI FET/FETAC: TUS accepts QQI-FET/FETAC awards for entry on all courses of study.
