Program Overview
This part-time course explores the applications of cell culture technology in biological research and commercialization. It covers topics such as animal and plant cell culture techniques, genetic engineering of animal cells, and protein expression. Assessment includes an exam and a report, and the course is currently under review. It can be taken as a standalone CPD or within the MSc Advanced Healthcare Practice (Clinical) framework.

- Animal cell culture methods and factors necessary for the maintenance and growth of cells in culture
- Design of culture facilities
- Safety issues
- Genetic engineering of animal cells: infection, expression vectors, immortalised cell lines, transgenic animals
- Animal cell products and commercialisation
- Plant cell culture and commercial products derived from plant cells
- Protein expression and processing. Scale-up, bioreactors, process control and downstream processing
