Overview
The Teaching Theater PK–12 Graduate Certificate is a pre-service program that prepares students for Theatre Arts licensure by the Commonwealth of Virginia. In conjunction with the College of Education and Human Development, the certificate curriculum consists of graduate-level theater and education courses, field experience observation and pre-service teaching internship.
Admissions
Applicants to all graduate programs at George Mason University must meet the admission standards and application requirements for graduate study as specified on the Graduate Admissions policy page. Specific graduate admissions requirements can be found on the College of Visual and Performing Arts Graduate Admissions requirements page.
Policies
Students must earn a B- or higher in all coursework. For policies governing all graduate programs see AP.6 Graduate Policies.
Certificate Requirements
Total credits: 21
This certificate may be pursued on a full-or part-time basis.

- THR 548: Advanced Foundations of Theater Education (3 credits)
- EDRD 501: Literacy in Fine Arts, Health, and Physical Education (3 credits)
- EDUC 511: Child and Adolescent Development in Global Contexts (3 credits)
- THR 549: Advanced Elementary Theater Education (3 credits)
- THR 550: Advanced Secondary Theater Education (3 credits)
- Six credits of THR 555: Theater Education Internship (6 credits)
Cumulative GPA prior to internship application must be 3.0. Prior to internship, students must pass: technology & child abuse standards.
