Music Education Licensure for PK-12 Graduate Certificate

Overview

This certificate may be pursued on a full-or part-time basis. This certificate program qualifies for Title IV Federal Financial Aid.

Applicants to all graduate programs at George Mason University must meet the admission standards and application requirements for graduate study as specified on the Graduate Admissions policy page.   • MUSI 561: Music Curriculum and Instructional Procedures (3 credits)
  • MUSI 593: Foundations of Music Education (3 credits)
  • EDRD 501: Literacy in Fine Arts, Health, and Physical Education (3 credits)
  • EDUC 511: Child and Adolescent Development in Global Contexts (3 credits)
  • Select one course from the following:
    • MUSI 566: Instrumental Methods for Band (3 credits)
    • MUSI 567: Instrumental Methods, Strings (3 credits)
    • MUSI 568: Vocal and Choral Methods (3 credits)

Internship

Upon completion of coursework, the candidate must complete a student teaching internship at the elementary and secondary levels in a program-approved public or private school (6 credits). Prior to being permitted to student teach, and after receiving an endorsement by the Director of Undergraduate Music Education/Graduate Licensure, the candidate must complete and pass the Praxis Subject Assessment (Music Content Knowledge-5113) and the MTEC Competency Check.

The requirements and procedures for applying for an internship as well as the MTEC Competency Check are outlined in the Music Education Handbook. Candidates will be advised to sign up for vocal and/or instrumental technique courses during coursework as needed to help prepare them for these exams. Note that techniques courses are not required and thus cannot be transferred or counted as course substitutions for completion of the certificate.
