Program Overview

The University of Essex's PhD in Applied Social and Economic Research is a full-time, 3-4 year quantitative research program that focuses on sociology and other social sciences. The program prepares students for academic careers as well as professional roles in government departments, international organizations, and statistical institutions. Students will have access to a variety of longitudinal and panel data sets, including the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) and Understanding Society. The program offers an MPhil in Applied Social and Economic Research.
