The Postgraduate Diploma Management and Organisational Dynamics is a nine-month, full-time program offered jointly by Essex Business School and the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies. Program Description:

The program is designed for individuals who want to understand the complex processes that impact change in organizations. It combines critical management theory with the developing field of systems-psychodynamics. The program is taught by internationally recognized experts in the field.

Outline:

Year 1

• Component 01: COMPULSORY (20 CREDITS)
• Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management:
This module encourages students to think and reflect upon the nature of managing people and organizations. It covers topics such as organizational behavior, human resource management, and the core issues affecting organizational behavior and outcomes.
• Component 02: COMPULSORY (20 CREDITS)
• Management and Strategy:
This module encourages students to reflect on a variety of issues relating to management and business strategy. It introduces students to the basics of management, such as dealing with teams, culture, and organizational management structures. It also covers topics such as strategic management, analyzing the external and internal environments of the business, and avenues for implementation.
• Component 03: COMPULSORY (30 CREDITS)
• Psychoanalytic Theory:
This module explores the main theoretical developments since Freud, with emphasis on the British school. It covers authors such as Sandor Ferenczi, Anna Freud, Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion, Donald Winnicott, John Bowlby, Michael Balint, Jacques Lacan, and Heinz Kohut. The aim of the module is to understand the developments while comparing different analytic and psychoanalytic schools.
• Component 05: COMPULSORY (30 CREDITS)
• Psychoanalysis of Groups and Organisations:
This module explores the unconscious and how it influences the behavior of groups.

Teaching:

• Postgraduate students in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies typically have 2 hours of contact time for each module per week.
This consists of a two-hour seminar or workshop, or a one-hour lecture and a one-hour seminar.
• Teaching takes place in relatively small seminars and fora, with a focus on group discussion.
• Students also have a personal tutor who advises them about their work on an individual basis.

Careers:

• Graduates go on to a number of different destinations, including further study and training in psychoanalysis, Jungian analysis, or psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
• As part of the course, students are required to attend a conference.
